Thoughts for Group Leaders
As a group leader, you have the opportunity to make this learning experience more meaningful for those participating in the In Search of Timothy Complete Leadership Training Course. Here are some thoughts to help you be a more effective leader and facilitator throughout this series.
• Encourage each participant to download the ebook copy of the book In Search of Timothy and the accompanying eworkbook at the bottom of this page. Participants will receive greater benefit if they’ve read the corresponding chapters before watching the video sessions.
• Know the material yourself. Make sure that you’ve read the material in the book and workbook and previewed the video lesson. Also, if you think through the discussion components prior to the sessions, you’ll have a lot better feel for the material and will be able to guide the students through the lessons more effectively.
• We suggest opening and closing the sessions with prayer. It is important for people going through this material to have their hearts open to hear what God is saying to them, and to be open to becoming all that God wants them to become.
• It is good to let the people attending know what the format will be. This can involve a simple statement such as, “We’re going to open with prayer, watch the 28-minute video, and then have 30 minutes to discuss the material.”
• After watching the video, it is helpful to go through the Scenic Route and Inspection Station sections in the workbook as a group to make sure everyone has grasped the material. You can ask different people to provide answers for the fill-in-the-blank and multiple-choice questions throughout this review. Remember though—having the right idea or concept is more important than having the exact word. As a point of reference, all the answers are listed in the Answer Key section at the end of the workbook.
• Next, it’s good to have the group members share their reflections and thoughts from the Unpacking the Principles section. If you have a large number of people in the group, it can be helpful to have them break up into smaller groups of five to six members for this time.
• Remember that interaction can really help everyone’s learning experience. Open-ended questions like the ones in the Unpacking the Principles section are ideal for stimulating discussion. These are questions that can’t be answered with a simple “yes” or “no.” Questions like “What did you learn . . . ,” “Have you ever experienced . . . ,” or “How can you apply . . .” can help stimulate discussion, learning, and application.
